Dear Parents,

I realize children with autism face bullies, too. As you know, autism is a pervasive developing disorder and children on the spectrum may be vulnerable, so they’ll need our assistance from a theoretical perspective to workable practices.

Children on the spectrum are characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, so whatever we can do to help them navigate potential issues is always advantageous to their successes both in the school setting and our communities.

Together, we can help prevent their anguish in our public schools (classrooms, on the playground and in the cafeteria), but especially those ‘hot spot’ areas around the schools where there’s low lighting, odd corners and under stairwells. We must also be observant in the boys/girls restrooms and any place where children can be bullied without the watchful eyes of school officials.

In addition, please be aware of the definition of bullying and the various signs. Once you have a handle on what bullying is, you can better assist your children. Always, STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. Remain vigilant, but act on their behalf swiftly and cautiously.

It’s important to have a great working relationship with your child’s school leaders and teachers. They will play crucial roles in intervention services and aid to your children, so please approach them with caution, but expect assistance and support. For more information on how to approach school officials, please download my FREE e-book, ‘The Bully Band Parents in Rhythm’.

Dr. Cherrye is here to support you, and your wonderful children.
